Reinventing fashion week

by Andrea Awerhoff

“Fashion week is a symbolic, cultural focal point of the fashion world, a platform where new visions, trends, and talents emerge.”

Few months ago Copenhagen, became the cultural and commercial meeting point of the Scandinavian fashion industry. Hosting its first sustainable fashion week and launching its 2020 – 2022 Sustainable Action Plan.

Sustainability, is merged in the city culture and the way of living, it not just reflected through fashion, but it is also aligned to the value of its citizens.

For this last edition, the traditional event was transformed into a platform of advocacy, aiming to actively engage with the industry and make them more responsible, beyond their participation in the fashion week itself.

One of the major responsibilities of Copenhagen Fashion Week is to accelerate the sustainable transition of brands. Through the launching of the three-year plan, a baseline of 17 standards is set out, for brands to meet by 2023 to qualify and participate for the next fashion weeks.

The plan integrates four of United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. (12,13,17 ) and portraits the commitments of reducing the fashion week’s climate-carbon footprint by 50% and become a zero-waste event.

The action plan is not solely dependent on organizers; a major aspect of the plan relies on the designers.

For instance, a brand that gave a big step into advocacy was the Danish brand Carcel – which employs women prisoners, by rejecting the traditional catwalk format. The label didn’t show any designs, instead, it shared a video to highlight the key issues within the industry. For the finale of the show, guests were invited onto the catwalk to underline the role they have to play for real change.

Fashion brands can become the first movers and shakers on sustainability and can authentically communicate an eco-friendly message that the audience is paying attention to.
